My twin boys (8 years old) had firsts this weekend - first Pinewood Derby and first flag football game. Stick with me, this is amusing (if you are a dad, otherwise it is lame).

Kinja'd!!!

Pinewood Derby - their cars might have been the slowest ones. I put in as much work (or as little in this case) as they wanted. They still had fun, and maybe they will be more interested next year. [Theirs are the ones with washers stacked on top; the blue car dusted them.]

Next off to flag football. They were way more interested. We showed up late due to aforementioned Pinewood Derby, so we missed the first practice as well. Basically showed up at game time. [Also note it was 45 degrees with 15 mph winds, which for Houston is COLD.]

Kinja'd!!!

Forward to a few minutes into the game, and one of my boys intercepts and runs it back for a touchdown. I’m cheering, telling him good job, but I’m not the overly enthusiastic dad. As he was running it back I noticed that another father was videoing with his iphone.

So I go up, introduce myself, and ask if he can send me the video. Again, I’m excited, but with the cold all the parents are fairly subdued. He says yes, and I make polite small talk while he pulls it up.

I say “it was one of my boys that made the interception, he will be excited especially since it is his first game.”

I politely ask “which kid is yours?”

.....

He responds “the one that threw the interception.”

Luckily he was cool about it, and I apol ogized.

That is me, Mr. Smooth Dad.

Enjoy it while you can! I ended up coaching basketball, volleyball, and track and being a Scout leader.

Now that my son is no longer in Scouts, I really miss the derbies and the campouts. I’m glad neither of my kids are interested in basketball, but I miss coaching volleyball and track. Both kids are in now schools with paid coaching staff, so I’m no longer needed. :(

Ours are always next to dead last too. Running this thing on Saturday. Still have some finish work to do but you get the drift. He named it the Green Streak.. Have to mount the switch in the tail , polish the axles and wheels and let him do some finish paintwork but even with all that we are way ahead of our normal last minute style.

They have been apart since they were 4.  They are way too crazy if they spend too much time together.  Are yours boys or girls?

Dadlopik is the best lopik..

My kids are picking up speed in everything they do, they can already skate better than me, but I figure I’ve got a few years before they are faster on xc skis.

They are 5 and 7 and really getting interested in RC and Models.. I fully support this endeavour.

As a fraternal twins, my sister and I got separated pretty quickly. I’d recommend the separation.

Cool!

My daughter started in scouts this year. We just did the rocket derby on Saturday. She didn’t take much weight off of hers, so it went about two feet every time.

Pinewood derby will be in a couple months for her. Hopefully she’ll be be willing to put in some more work on that. I’ll help (she’s only 6 after all), but I am not doing it for  her.

Loved Pinewood Derby as a kid. Never finished lower than 2nd in all the tournaments. I had a simple physics trick - set one front wheel slightly higher than the others, and put all of my weights (I would drill holes on the bottom of the car and drop in fishing weights) behind the back axle. The car would only roll on three wheels, reducing friction, and she’d beat almost everyone else.

Except the other kid who did the same trick I did. ^_^

I signed my gf’s youngest up for flag football this past fall. He loved it...he also had a pick 6. So me of the parents and coaches though, you’d think it was the NFL. I feel bad for those kids with over zealous parents about flag football. I hope he gets the same coach next year, he was level headed and supportive, never negatively screaming.

I s it the NFL sanctioned league?

M experience is girls are way different than boys.  I have a pair of girls (not twins, 12 and 10) in addition to my boys, and they could not be more different.  That said, I would still separate them just to increase their social skills.

Not NFL sanctioned.  Pretty progressive, but they do still have winners and losers, and there is a championship with a single champion and runner up trophy, but not participation trophies. Those are good for younger kids but around this age I like them learning that not everyone wins at the end.

girls and boys are for sure very different. my little guy is an animal , the girls are much calmer (yet still animals) i think you are right tho, if they are together they will become dependent on each other

same here, there’s a playoff with a champion. Every team makes it though but it’s one and done with winners. Just curious if the rules were similar i n the NFL leagues vs. non sanctioned. All in with playoffs is like 8 weeks if you make the final. Th ey do spring and fall.

No, I haven’t read all the rules but it is really odd. There is some scenario where they can’t run, only pass; there is some rule I couldn’t figure out about rushing the QB. [Full disclosure - they sent out a link to the rules and I didn’t even try to read them yet.  It was also really cold, so I wasn’t standing around chatting after the game to figure things out.]

sounds about the same. It took me 3-4 games to be able to follow the game and know what’s happening.

Obviously the blue car was built by a dad. My hands are not clean here. I built my son’s Pinewood car for the most part. I would make him work on it, but if I didn’t do it, he’d have just been playing Minecraft. You can tell that many cars are dad-built. Certainly the competitive ones are. In our pack, on race day, they’d leave out uncompleted kits and supplies for the cubs to actually build cars and have fun while the heats were being run. I should be ashamed, but the alternative was him not doing it at all. He still thought of it as -his- car.

If you bias the weight to the rear (like the blue car) you’ll have more energy and go faster when it comes to the flat part of the track, because the center of gravity is higher than a car with a more forward CG so more potential energy . Wheel alignment is also important.
